My name is Jacey Lindner. I am a school nurse for JPPSS and one of my assigned schools is Westbank Community School. We started a “Biggest Loser” contest here at Westbank Community School for the faculty. It was inspired by wanting to get healthier and spurred on by friendly competition. We started on November 7th and will carry the competition through 8 weeks until 1-15-16, excluding holidays. It has been motivating all of us on staff to make better, healthier food choices and become more active. There are 2 teams of 7 staff members, Team Grindtime and The A-Team. We do weekly weigh-ins in the nurse’s office every Friday morning to track progress. So far, there has been a total weight loss of 73.5 pounds among the 14 participants! And that’s with the Thanksgiving holidays thrown in where there tends to be unhealthy foods all around to tempt our warriors! I am so proud of those who chose to participate in this motivational challenge. It is a win just to get healthier and more active, despite any weight loss. Some participants have reported greater energy and lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels since starting this challenge, so the health benefits are far-reaching. I urge other schools to start their own “Biggest Loser” challenge and motivate each other to lead healthier lives. A special thanks to Principal Mann who came to me with this idea and has been instrumental in keeping our staff motivated to stay the course and work hard toward their individual and group goals. I feel that it has not only made us all healthier, but also closer as co-workers, bonding over this shared experience. The competitive nature has come out full force in some, and that just adds to the excitement and fun! It has been a blast and such a positive experience, and I am so glad we are doing this. It has helped me meet some of my personal goals as well and I have more energy, am making better food choices and being much more active than before. Not wanting to let our teams down motivates us even more to strive for the best we can do! Knowing you will have to weigh-in each week keeps you accountable for the choices you’ve made during the week also. Thanks to all our wonderful WB Community faculty members who have started this journey and are seeing it through to the end with fervor! Words cannot express how proud I am of each and every one of you! Here’s to 3 more weeks striving for a healthier YOU!!!
